I grew up in a two-parent home. My father was a blue-collar worker and my mother was a nurse. I knew my parents loved me but the attention and love I desired from my father was limited. My father was a great provider and he always showed up! He was there any time I needed him and even when I didn’t want him to, he showed up. He was that kind of dad!

Even though my dad was physically there, emotionally he was unavailable. My father didn’t know how to love and connect with me emotionally and the rejection I felt from him followed me throughout my life and relationships.  

Rejection really hurts and it also can inflict damage to your psychological well-being that goes beyond emotional pain. Prolonged rejection turns into anger, bitterness, depression, anxiety and so forth. I didn’t realize until I got married that the fear of rejection was still an issue for me, and it impacted the way I communicated with my husband.  It also impacted how we connected intimately. I knew that I wasn’t showing up in my marriage as my best self. The work I did prior to marriage was more so for spiritual growth and maturity. I thought that if I just worked on my God relationship then everything else would fall in line and work itself out but not so.  

I recall the day my husband and I got into the worst argument ever. I can’t remember the details of the argument, but I do remember that it was one of the worst arguments we have ever had in our almost 8 years of marriage. I showed out in a big way. My MBA (Mindset, Behavior, and Attitude) was no representation of God and not only did I disappoint Him, I disappointed myself in how I behaved. It was at that point that God showed me some areas about me that needed to change. He told me that the better I became, the better my marriage would be. He showed me that if I didn’t work on ME then not only would I jeopardize my marriage, but my life and purpose would suffer as well.
